Education

One of the most, if not the most important issues facing Alabamians is ensuring that our children have
access to the highest quality of education. Being a father of two children in Alabama's public school
system, I know all too well the need for improved performance, highly trained teachers, after school
learning opportunities, safer schools and the assurance that the needs of special needs children are met.

The key to expanding opportunities for Alabama and the nation as a whole is by providing a world class
education at every level (elementary through college). This can only be achieved by ensuring that our
children have the appropriate resources to succeed, teachers are highly trained in the subjects that they
teach and students are not allowed to slip through the cracks, but instead receive the highest quality of
education possible.

We must invest in education reform by implementing expanded professional development programs for
our teachers. We have to attract and retain those who are highly qualified. This will in turn raise student
achievement levels. We have to combine tough accountability with enough money to get the job done.

I will support educational programs with a proven track record. For example Head Start, which is one of
Alabama's most effective tools for preparing children for school, provides an early education, healthcare
and family support needed for our children to succeed in school. Head Start helps narrow the
achievement gap that keeps many Alabama families from reaching their dreams. I will support
improvements to Head Start's academic content and requirements and help expand accessibility to reach
more children. All children should be given the opportunity to succeed regardless of their background.

Another area of great importance is special education. Children with disabilities deserve a free and
appropriate education. Education is the key to opportunity for all children and it is especially important for
children with disabilities or special needs. I will strongly enforce the Individuals with Disabilities Education
Act. IDEA has helped numerous children lead productive and independent lives. Education is the
difference between lost potential and productive careers for all children. Teachers of specials needs
students should be certified in the area of special education. I will fight to ensure appropriate
accommodations are in place to provide each and every student in our school systems with the
opportunity to receive a world class education. Education is critical to the success of our children and our
futures and must be made accessible and affordable to every Alabamian.

Education doesn't need to end after the grade school years. We need to expand educational
opportunities for college and continuing education by providing relief from skyrocketing college tuition, by
increasing access to grants and student loans, to implement and support programs that reward students
that attend and succeed in college.
